This project involved the complete Deep Retrofit of this seaside home with the addition of a two storey extension to the rear. The house was originally built around 1900 as part of a terrace therefore the preservation of the facade, the layout of the interior and the original details in the rooms was of great importance. The extension to the rear is to replace an existing part two part single storey extension. The extension sits at a lower level than the main house, bringing the new kitchen in level with the rear garden. The small courtyard creates separation between the new and the old and brings much needed light into the original formal dining room in the back of the main house. On this constrained site, the clever use of windows and the use of rooflights is essential to bring enough light into the rooms.
Due to the age and seaside location of the house, there are extensive work needed to repair the damage caused by years of exposure to salty air.
